It was built in the late 1930s by the Veterans Conservation Corps, a New Deal agency that provided jobs to unemployed veterans during the Great Depression.\" width=\"900\" height=\"600\" class=\"size-full wp-image-24138\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-24138\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">On Lake Minatare<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>On Lake Minatare in the panhandle of western Nebraska there is a lighthouse that doesn&#8217;t actually contain a light.  The Lake Minatare Lighthouse is one of only seven inland lighthouses in the United States. It was built in the late 1930s by the Veterans Conservation Corps, a New Deal agency that provided jobs to unemployed veterans during the Great Depression. The 55 foot stone structure on a peninsula on the lake today it stands as a symbol of a former age.  Last July I went to Lake Minatare to visit the lighthouse and climb to the top.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_24139\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-24139\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/blog-vm.journeyoflight.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/01\/IMG_6586-staircase-lighthouse-minatare.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/blog-vm.journeyoflight.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/01\/IMG_6586-staircase-lighthouse-minatare.jpg\" alt=\"Staircase at Lake Minatare\" width=\"600\" height=\"900\" class=\"size-full wp-image-24139\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-24139\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Staircase at Lake Minatare<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>As I climbed the stairs to the top, I found the walls to be very close.  In fact, my shoulders touched both sides as I ascended.
