After an intense storm, a rainbow touches the sun-drenched fields of Nebraska. While there is no pot of gold, the landscape glows with the warm glow of sunset.
Chimney Rock in western Nebraska was a beacon for early settlers. During the 19th century it served as a landmark along the Mormon Trail, Oregon Trail, and California Trail.
A vertical version of this photograph is available at Chimney Rock - Vertical.
This photograph was captured in the dead of winter, when the old Missouri River oxbow at DeSoto National Wildlife Refuge transforms into a reflective sheet of ice with a single rock still visible.
As the sun sets at DeSoto Bend National Wildlife Refuge the sky seems to light on fire.
Peyto Lake in Banff National Park is known for its turquoise blue water caused by runoff from the nearby Glacier. Most photographers will tell you to photograph this scene in the afternoon in order to maximize the reflection of the mountains on the lake. I, however, wanted to see how it would look in the early morning. After photographing the sunrise on Bow Lake I traveled the short distance to Peyto Lake to capture this image.
Just as the sun dipped below the horizon and I turned toward home, I found this country road that had been created through the grass. I stopped quickly and was only able to make a couple of exposures before the all the light was gone.
This photograph captures the reflection of the sunset as the sun illuminates the leading edge of clouds at Frank Shoemaker Marsh near Lincoln, Nebraskam, one of the few remaining homes of the endangered Salt Creek Tiger Beetle.
The warm setting sun shines brightly across the frozen lake before dipping below the horizon. On a cold February evening in 2006 I ventured to DeSoto Wildlife Refuge looking to photograph the Bald Eagles that nest here in the winter. What I found was a gorgeous sunset.
Near sunset on a recently cut field, clouds form in the late evening above a row of hay bales in Eastern Nebraska near Memphis.
The setting sun shines through a small hole in the clouds as the Platte River flows past a lodged log. This was taken near Schramm Park Recreation Area.
A baby elk pauses on the hill.
As I waited for the sun to set on Beach #4 on the Olympic Pennisula of Washington, I captured the rythmic flow of the water in and out of this small inlet on the shore.
