PhotographsDescription
Early morning on the Great Sand Dunes after a stormy night brought clouds that reflected intense warm hues from the rising sun. I had envisaged a photograph like this at the sand dunes for over a year, capturing the the texture of the dunes, the sweeping lines that lead to the Sangre de Cristo mountains, with a brillant sunrise.
As I photographed this scene, I almost imagined myself in a foreign land as the sun dipped below the horizon. The shapes of the dunes in this photo become abstract lines and patterns in the late dusk light.
I was able to take only 3 photographs while the sun hit the mountain, for less than one minute the mountain glowed with a golden brillance at Lake Helene in Rocky Mountain National Park, Colorado. The clouds on the eastern sky soon obscured the sun for a couple of hours, while small drops of rain fell around me.
On a cool, autumn morning, silence reigned across the scenic Great Sand Dunes National Park, the quiet only occasionally broken by the sound of a breeze flowing through the dunes. On top of one of the larger dunes, I captured the patterns of the sand as the dunes drift into one another, creating a path to the distant Sangre de Cristo Mountains. Beyond the far peaks, the rising sun illuminates the cloud bank with a yellowish-orange tint.
Still and peaceful, Dream Lake in Rocky Mountain National Park reflects an image of the majestic Hallett Peak while it glows red with the light of the rising sun.

With only an occasional rustle, sunlight streams down on the forest landscape causing the aspen trees to glow with a golden brillance during the autumn in Colorado.
Unusually calm, Emerald Lake reflects a perfect and symmetrical image of the grand Hallet Peak and Flattop Mountain illuminated with alpenglow. The only sounds on this quiet morning are the flow of a waterfall across the lake and the chirping of a nearby Steller's Jay.

On this day, as many days through time, the exposed rocks on the tundra area of Rocky Mountain National Park bear witness to the rising sun and its illumination of Longs Peak.

Near sunset on a recently cut field, clouds form in the late evening above a row of hay bales in eastern Nebraska near Memphis.
As the sun sets at DeSoto Bend National Wildlife Refuge the sky seems to light on fire. This photograph was captured on a brisk, early spring evening, the remaining clouds streaked across the sky and reflected the colors of the setting sun.
Just as the sun dipped below the horizon and I turned toward home, I found this country road that had been created through the grass. I stopped quickly and was only able to make a couple of exposures before the all the light was gone.
This photograph captures the reflection of the sunset as the sun illuminates the leading edge of clouds at Frank Shoemaker Marsh near Lincoln, Nebraska, one of the few remaining homes of the endangered Salt Creek Tiger Beetle.

Pyramid Lake is still mirroring the image of Pyramid Mountain bathed in the first light of the morning.
The morning sun hits the Mt. Lauriet near an Oxbow of the Mistaya River in Banff National Park.
Peyto Lake in Banff National Park is known for its turquoise blue water caused by runoff from the nearby Glacier. Most photographers will tell you to photograph this scene in the afternoon in order to maximize the reflection of the mountains on the lake. I, however, wanted to see how it would look in the early morning. After photographing the sunrise on Bow Lake I traveled the short distance to Peyto Lake to capture this image.
One of the most scenic and popular destinations in Banff National Park, Lake Moraine reflects the ten peaks on fire with an early morning glow. Around 3:30 in the morning I rose to get to Lake Moraine for a 6:00 sunrise. Since I was 60 miles away, I had to make sure to give myself enough time to get there and get set up. This scene was my reward.

During an overcast day, I captured this waterfall in Alberta, Canada. Overcast days are optimal for slowing the shutter speed and thus slowing the movement of the water to a silky flow. I felt that this technique gave this photo a feeling of a bit of motion, instead of a "snapshot of time" where everything is completely frozen. Through this I hope that this allows you to be drawn into the composition more, rather than being just a viewer.
