PhotographsDescription
Early morning on the Great Sand Dunes after a stormy night brings clouds that reflect intense colors from the rising sun. I had envisaged a photograph like this at the sand dunes for over a year, capturing the the texture of the dunes, the sweeping lines that lead to the Sangre de Cristo mountains, with a brillant sunrise.
As I photographed this scene, I almost imagined myself in a foreign land as the sun dipped below the horizon. The shapes of the dunes in this photo become abstract lines and patterns in the late dusk light.
Able to take only 3 photographs while the sun hit the mountain, for less than one minute the mountain glowed with a golden brillance at Lake Helene in Rocky Mountain National Park, Colorado.
I photographed the patterns of the sand dunes drifting into one another, creating a path to the distant Sangre de Cristo Mountains.
In this photo, Dream Lake at Rocky Mountain National Park reflects Hallett Peak which glows red with the reflected light of the rising sun.

On an early spring evening in western Iowa, I photographed the sun setting behind an abandoned rustic barn and homestead which illuminated the nearby budding tree.
Near sunset on a recently cut field, clouds form in the late evening above a row of hay bales in Eastern Nebraska near Memphis.
As the sun sets at DeSoto Bend National Wildlife Refuge the sky seems to light on fire. This photograph was captured on a brisk, early spring evening, the remaining clouds streaked across the sky and reflected the colors of the setting sun.
Just as the sun dipped below the horizon and I turned toward home, I found this country road that had been created through the grass. I stopped quickly and was only able to make a couple of exposures before the all the light was gone.
This photograph captures the reflection of the sunset as the sun illuminates the leading edge of clouds at Frank Shoemaker Marsh near Lincoln, Nebraska, one of the few remaining homes of the endangered Salt Creek Tiger Beetle.
Early morning rays illuminate the Badlands in Badlands National Park, South Dakota. Originally designated a National Monument, Badlands National Park was redesignated a National Park on November 10, 1978.
The warm setting sun shines brightly across the frozen lake before dipping below the horizon. On a cold February evening in 2006 I ventured to DeSoto Wildlife Refuge looking to photograph the Bald Eagles that nest here in the winter. What I found was a gorgeous sunset.
A maple tree bursts forth into glorious autumn colors while the setting sun shines through the leaves.
Chimney Rock in western Nebraska was a beacon for early settlers. During the 19th century it served as a landmark along the Mormon Trail, Oregon Trail, and California Trail.

After an intense storm, a rainbow touches the sun-drenched fields of Nebraska. While there is no pot of gold, the landscape glows with the warm glow of sunset.

It was a calm evening at Mahoney State Park with the sun just below the horizon. The pinkish light was reflected off the clouds and then reflected and dispersed from the lake.
The fog rises from the valleys in the Nebraska Sandhills briefly allowing the rising sun to shine across the scene.
A small lake nestled in the Sandhills reflects the rising sun on a cool spring morning.
The just risen sun shines through trees and fog in Ponca State Park, Nebraska.
Although autumn was fleeting in Nebraska and Iowa this year, there were some hold outs after the snowfall. This maple tree turned brillant warm oranges and reds two weeks after a snow storm and managed to hang on to a majority of its fall leaves during some pretty gusty times. I couldn't help but stop and capture the vibrant colors with the setting sun filtering through the leaves.
An early spring rain drenches the prairie landscape, creating reflective puddles in a newly plowed road.

In 1980, Kenneth Swyers tried to parachute onto the Gateway Arch, he succeeded in reaching the structure, however, he failed in his subsequent base jump attempt, sliding down one side to his death.
From the base of the north leg looking in a south easterly directly, the Gateway Arch curves through the sky and into the fog.
Built between February 12, 1963, and October 28, 1965 the Gateway Arch in St. Louis was designed to honor the westward expansion of the United States. Designed by architect Eero Saarinen and engineer Hannskarl Bandel, it is 630 feet wide at its base and 630 feet tall and is currently the tallest monument in the United States. From the base of the north leg looking in a south easterly directly, the structure curves through the sky almost touching the low clouds.

Pyramid Lake is still mirroring the image of Pyramid Mountain bathed in the first light of the morning.
The morning sun hits the mountains near an Oxbow of the Mistaya River in Banff National Park.
Peyto Lake in Banff National Park is known for its turquoise blue water caused by runoff from the nearby Glacier. Most photographers will tell you to photograph this scene in the afternoon in order to maximize the reflection of the mountains on the lake. I, however, wanted to see how it would look in the early morning. After photographing the sunrise on Bow Lake I traveled the short distance to Peyto Lake to capture this image.
One of the most scenic and popular destinations in Banff National Park, Lake Moraine reflects the ten peaks on fire with an early morning glow. Around 3:30 in the morning I rose to get to Lake Moraine for a 6:00 sunrise. Since I was 60 miles away, I had to make sure to give myself enough time to get there and get set up. This scene was my reward.

Mt. Rundle reflects in the Vermillion Lakes just prior to sunrise.
This is a great demonstration on how fast a scene in nature can change. This was taken just minutes after the a similar Lake Moraine shot. The wind had come up and blurred the reflection in the water and the sun had changed from a fiery orange to a warm yellow glow.

During an overcast day, I captured this waterfall in Alberta, Canada. Overcast days are optimal for slowing the shutter speed and thus slowing the movement of the water to a silky flow. I felt that this technique gave this photo a feeling of a bit of motion, instead of a "snapshot of time" where everything is completely frozen. Through this I hope that this allows you to be drawn into the composition more, rather than being just a viewer.
