Curves and CloudsBuilt between February 12, 1963, and October 28, 1965 the Gateway Arch in St. Louis was designed to honor the westward expansion of the United States. Designed by architect Eero Saarinen and engineer Hannskarl Bandel, it is 630 feet wide at its base and 630 feet tall and is currently the tallest monument in the United States. From the base of the north leg looking in a south easterly directly, the structure curves through the sky almost touching the low clouds.
